We were excited when Mark Ronson touched down in the country last month for Splendour In The Grass, but we were over the moon when we found out he and his all-star crew had hit up the triple j studios to perform a cover for Like A Version.
Ronson and co’s cover of Queens of the Stone Age’s ‘I Sat By The Ocean’ was easily one of the best of the year so far and their original, a performance of the Kevin Parker-starring ‘Daffodils’ with the man himself on vocals, was a silky smooth rendition of the memorable single.
But leave it to UK indie favourites Foals to beat Ronson at his own game. Filing into the triple j studios, the band performed a spacey and inescapably funky cover of ‘Daffodils’ that could just be the flagship track on the next Like A Version compilation album.
Foals’ cover stands out among what has been a great year for Like A Version performances. We’ve been blown away by the talent on display, especially from local bands like Dorsal Fins, who absolutely hit it out of the park with their cover of Kate Ceberano’s ‘Pash’.
We’ve also seen some rousing political statements, an incredible alt-rock mash-up, some ambitious takes on songs by the likes of FKA twigs, Jamie xx, and Fatboy Slim, as well as a raw take on an Australian classic.
