Blur’s Alex James To Get His Own Cooking Show
Damon Albarn isn’t the only Blur member that kept themselves suitably occupied during the band’s downtime before their 2008 reunion. Bassist Alex James has made quite the side career as a ‘foodie’, writing on the topic as a regular columnist in The Sun and is a certified, award-winning cheesemaker with his ‘Alex James presents’ range. Now the 44-year-old musician is making the most of his unique skillset as the co-host of a new cooking programme to air on the Seven Network on Sunday July 14 at 1:45pm. Recipes That Rock sees James hosting with celebrity chef Matt Stone in the new six-part series, which was filmed in Western Australia’s Margaret River region last November. Maybe James could convince his Blur bandmates to come join him next time he’s in the country for a cook-up. (via Music News)
Personal Yeezus Mashes Kanye With Depeche Mode
Hip hop superstar Kanye West has been at the centre of news headlines lately, what with the release of his brash, noisy new album Yeezus to critical acclaim, as well as his punningly-titled heir with Kim Kardashian, North West (didn’t know they were Hitchcock fans). Now the rapper’s angry new material is at the centre of that most telling of cultural signifiers: a mash-up. Brooklyn-based DJ Dan Chamberlain has collided the grinding guitars and chanting vocals of Depeche Mode’s 1989 arena-rock single, ‘Personal Jesus’ with West’s vitriolic ‘Black Skinhead’ and its tribal drumming loop, which sound suspiciously like Marilyn Manson’s ‘The Beautiful People’ but apparently aren’t. Now who’s the enterprising fan who’s going to put together Manson’s own cover of ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘The Beautiful People’ with Yeezy? It’s a gimme.
Snoop Dogg & Eddie Murphy Team Up For Reggae Song
Snoop Dogg has undergone his reggae transformation to become Snoop Lion as part of his latest album, April’s Reincarnation, which featured a ream of collaborations with the likes of Drake, Bust Rhymes, Chris Brown and even Miley Cyrus. But the gangsta rapper turned reggaeton reveller’s lastest team-up is with Hollywood actor and (former) funnyman Eddie Murphy, and much like Snoop’s recent rebirth, this isn’t a joke, but a straight-faced reggae tune. ‘Redlight’ is credited to the Beverly Hills Cop star ‘featuring Snoop Lion’ and cropped up on YouTube with a video featuring footage of Snoop and Murphy palling about in a recording studio. It’s not the first time Murphy’s tried his hand at music, in the 80s and 90s he released three solo albums, including a now hilariously dated duet with Michael Jackson on 1993 single ‘Whatzuptwitu‘ (via NME).

Don’t quite ‘get’ Radiohead’s current phase of glitchtronica influenced music-making? Were you one of those crying out for a round of ‘Street Spirit’ at their recent Australian Tour? Now you can relive the days the Oxford quintet were as well known for their their guitar-based rock as their dour grimaces, all while donating to a good cause. Paste Magazine are presenting a new download of a full-length concert taken from 1995, recorded just three days before the release of their career-making second album The Bands, for ‘free’ – the only hitch being that you’re strongly encouraged to make a donated ‘tip’ to Amnesty International as part of their Radiohead fan service. A donation of anywhere between $1 – $25 seems like a small price to pay for the high quality historic footage, recorded at New York City’s Tramps, featuring nearly the entire tracklist of The Bends before its official release, demonstrating the band starting to channel the moody beauty of their music in distinct contrast to the lurching guitar rock of the cuts from their 1993 debut, Pablo Honey, now utterly extinct from the Radiohead live show (such as ‘Vegetable’ and ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’). New Pearl Jam Album Rumoured? New Single In A Matter Of Weeks
Grunge era survivors and live institution Pearl Jam have just wrapped up the 20th Anniversary of their sophomore album Vs. and have reportedly finished work on their tenth studio album, with a rumoured title, tracklisting, and release date of October 19th surfacing online. The new set, rumoured to be called Tides is the band’s first album of new material since 2009’s Backspacer, with a new single ‘Mind Your Manners’ landing in a matter of weeks, on July 16th. Triple M are claiming they’ve already heard the new track, comparing it to 90s-era tune ‘Spin The Black Circle. “We just heard the new Pearl Jam song ‘Mind Your Manners’ from the upcoming album and what a cracking 3-minute beauty it is!” they wrote in a post that has since been removed from their website, “Short, sharp, hard and loud… If it’s any indication of the album that’s to come, the guys have picked up where they left Backspacer and added turbo charging.
