On the electronic front, UK wunderkind producer Gold Panda (aka Derwin Powers to the taxman) first flitted onto the public radar back in 2009 with the first of a since-steady stream of 7”s and EPs. He’s since dropped two critically-lauded full-length albums, 2010’s Lucky Shiner and 2013’s Half Of Where You Live.
Gold Panda is indeed an inveterate traveler – he’s lived for a stint in Japan as well as studying Oriental and African Studies at university – and this wanderlust is reflected throughout Half Of Where You Live, the vaguely conceptual opus fixated on geography in its lyrics and name-checking a slew of geographical mainstays such as Brazil and Hong Kong – as well as some more obscure locales – with a strong focus on his current abode in the bohemian enclave of Berlin. Musically the album is lush and ambient and reflects Gold Panda’s nomadic bent with its eclectic moods and textures, the producer’s muse seeming both deceptively complex and immediately accessible with a premium on melody and dance-worthy grooves.
Gold Panda showed Australian crowds just how potent his live show can be on his first visit in the summer of 2011, and now he’s returning armed with this killer swag of new material to get our feet moving and own brains spinning one more time.
