Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale hasn’t exactly been keeping it a secret that he’s been busy concocting something new in the studio. Now, he’s officially revealed that the band will release a new album early next year.
After months of promising social media updates, Stockdale has told Billboard that the new album he’s been working on in an LA recording studio will be called Victorious and is set to drop on 19th February 2016.
“I listened to it yesterday, or a couple of days ago, played it to a friend and just seeing people really freak out over ‘Victorious’ and seeing the way it hits them — the beat and the chorus — it’s almost like it’s having a second life now, and it’ll have another life as well when it comes out,” he said.
Stockdale has been working with producer Brendan O’Brien, best known for his work with the likes of Pearl Jam and AC/DC, to make a record that sounds “sound pretty big”. Stockdale explained, “It doesn’t sound like it’s in a cardboard box.”
Stockdale recorded all the guitar and bass parts himself, while drums were handled by Josh Freese (Devo, The Vandals) and Joey Waronker (Atoms for Peace, Ultraísta), who gave the album “many melodic beats” and “a lot of percussion on every song”.
“I’ve had enough time to process the success of the first record and finding your feet after success and all the experiences along the way — not to be embittered — hung up or burnt out from all the touring and enjoy it,” Stockdale said.
“I think I’m in a good head space creatively writing these songs. I think that would possibly come through, maybe a bit of maturity. I’ve always tried to steer clear from any finger-pointing songs or anything too angst-y. Whatever the feeling is I’ve tried to keep it optimistic.”
The album’s title track got its premiere on Apple’s Beats 1 radio station and is currently available to stream here. Rest assured, it sounds just like the classic Wolfmother we all know and love.
