It appears one of Australia’s leading universities was a big fan of Australia’s inclusion on this year’s Eurovision, as they’re now offering a subject wholly dedicated to the the European singing competition.

Nope, this isn’t a joke, Melbourne University have introduced a brand-spankin’ new unit for 2016 entitled Eurovisions for first year students which will introduce them to many facets of Europe today, as the guys at The Vine point out.

Melbourne Uni’s handbook outlines the unit as a way of showing students “Europe through the prism of its biggest annual media extravaganza, the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC)” going on to state that Eurovision “offers a rich site for exploring many issues at the core of Europe today: the expansion of the European Union, the integration of Europe as well as the ‘nation branding’ of new participating states. Through a series of case studies, this subject will examine a range of dimensions of Europe, including language, culture, diversity, the national and the transnational, as well as issues of gender and sexuality.”

So what’s achieved after successfully passing EURO10002 Eurovision? The learning outcomes read that one will:
– acquire an in-depth knowledge of the history and development of Europe through the prism of the Eurovision Song contest;

– develop a critical appreciation of how issues such as the integration of Europe and the nation branding of states are reflected in the Eurovision Song Contest;

– acquire the ability to communicate effectively about issues relating to the Eurovision Song Contest;

– acquire critical thinking and analytical skills

The breezy new subject will be on offer to a vast range of students, including any of those enrolled in Bachelors of Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Music or Science – sounds like the perfect bludge to us.
