Annoyed you won’t be at Coachella this weekend, couldn’t quite fork out the money for a ticket? Well, how does watching live sets from Tame Impala, Alt-J, and The xx from the comfort of your living room sound?
Coachella, one of the most breathtaking lineups of all festivals, is set to have an online stream, via YouTube, of every hour of the festival, which kicks off in California this weekend.
The streaming will take place for the third year in a row and will be available for music fans in Australian from 8am AEST on 13th April on Coachella’s YouTube channel, with footage of all five stages as well as interviews with the headline acts, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, and Blur to name a few.
Other acts include The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, Tegan and Sara, The xx, Alt J, Sigur Ros and Vampire Weekend. The festival will take place over two weekends, the 12th-14th April and 19th-21st April.
Best of all, Australian music fans will have the chance to enjoy a few of our country’s best bands rocking the desert crowd. Fans can watch Perth’s psychedelic rockers, Tame Impala from their living rooms when they play on Sunday 14th April and later on the 21st April for the second weekend at 12midday AEST (7pm California time). Best of all, Australian music fans will have the chance to enjoy a few of our country’s best bands rocking the desert crowd…
You can also enjoy a live set from fellow Australian musicians Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, set to perform on the third night of the festival (14th and 19th April) at 1.45pm AEST (8.45pm Cali time). Coachella will also see him reform side-project Grinderman for the festival, playing the first night (April 12th and 19th) of Coachella, at 3.10pm AEST (10.10pm Cali).
The event seems to be the place for bands reuniting, with British rockers, The Stone Roses and Blur recently on the reunion trail, as well as Jurassic 5 and the Violent Femmes getting the band back together for Coachella.
The side-project from Death Cab Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello is this year celebrating the 10th anniversary of their only album, Give Up and will play the second day of Coachella (13th and 20th April) at 2.30pm AEST (9.30pm Californian time).
The band have also locked in a series of other festivals in the 10th Birthday celebrations, including Barcelona’s Primavera Sound in May, and Chicago’s Lollapalooza in August, which raised Australian fans’ hopes for the possibility that the duo would be down under for July’s Splendour In Th Grass. However, to much disappoint this was recently ruled out by Tamborello.
“Sadly I don’t think we’re gonna make it there”, said Tamborello. ”We have a pretty small window of time where this is possible and I haven’t heard anything about any dates there. It’s sad we don’t have any more time to do more of the world. I’ve never been to Australia!”
More recently, Harvest promoter AJ Maddah revealed that he had tried to book The Postal Service for this year’s Harvest festival but had “failed” after they turned down “Aus in general” ruling out the possibility of an Australian performance at the event (though Franz Ferdinand could be on the cards…); meaning that Coachella’s Youtube stream may very well be the only way for Aussies to catch the Postal Service live.
