The fourth release from Dutch psychedelic rockers Dewollf – aptly titled Dewolff IV, is a wild ride of punchy riffs, harsh vocals and varying musical styles mashed together as one.

Released in Australia alongside a national tour, the record shows the incredible depth and variety of Dewolff’s musical influences.

“Voodoo Mademoiselle” is classic, by-the-book rock, whilst “Devils” Due forays into the falsettoed and echoed region of the psychedelic. Track “Crumbling Heart” however, with its reverberating guitar riffs, skates the lines between rock and blues.

Dewolff IV features a five part, almost rock opera like series called ‘A Mind Slip’. Beginning with track “Devil On A Wire/The Telephone,” the series flows through multiple moods and themes – from the quiet and stripped back to the head-bangingly heavy, before climaxing at raucous album closer “Vicious Times.”

The highlight of ‘A Mind Slip’ however, is the third of the series, “Sixth Dimension Blues/ The Telephone Pt. 2,” which alternates perfectly between stripped back, breathy vocals and heavy riffs for an intense listening experience.

At times the strength of the albums’ genre bending ability can turn to a weakness, with the flow of various tracks feeling a little clunky and mismatched.

However, overall Dewolff IV manages to pull together a lot – and does it well.
