It’s that time of the year again, when the jewel of Victoria’s music calendar is ready to reveal the first of its very enviable deck.

Taking place over the 12th, 13th, and 14th December, the ticket ballot for Meredith Music Festival 2014 is now open as the benevolent matriarch, Aunty Meredith, confirms the first band on the lineup.

Playing on the opening Friday night of what will be the 24th edition of the much-loved festival is none other than The War On Drugs. Led by world-weary guitar hero Adam Granduciel, the Philly fuzz-rockers take to the Supernatural Amphiteatre stage on the first of Meredith’s two glorious nights and three splendid days.

The War On Drugs arrive in Australia in the wake of the critical success of Lost In The Dream, the band’s third full-length effort that’s been landing in the upper echelons of many mid-year best of 2014 lists – including ours. The War On Drugs’ debut at The ‘Sup marks nearly a year since the band’s last visit Down Under, as part of last year’s Falls Festival and Southbound lineups.

With one stage, BYO beverages, zero commercial sponsors, glorious campgrounds, the famed ‘No Dickheads Policy’, and some of the most picturesque views this side of the hemisphere – all the usual trimmings are in place to ensure Meredith Music Festival 2014 will continue to draw the long-attending faithful as well as first-timers. Or as our own Meredith virgin wrote in their first-ever dispatch from the event: “For those who haven’t had their first Meredith: I can now smugly say you haven’t lived.”

“Last year we chose to reduce the size of Meredith by 500 people – it was niiiiice, so that will stay in place again for more Time and Space,” explains Aunty Meredith, which means the all-important Subscriber Ticket Ballot is as crucial as ever. The first round of the Meredith 2014 ticket ballot will be on or before 11th August for existing subscribers, followed a few weeks later for newer additions.

Ballot winners will be notified by email with a unique Meredith Key for the online box office and there’s only type of ticket: the Full Meredith Experience (three days/two nights/camping/parking) for $318.80 (+$10 b/f). Ballot and Online tickets via Registered Post are an additional $7. That’s a $9 increase to the ticket price from last year, but you can bet that’s being put towards booking a killer lineup to hurdle over the festival’s own high standards.

So get ready for another year of zero lineup clashes, nudie runs, drinks with the lineup, fun in the sun, beer, tunes, and memory-making at Meredith Music Festival 2014.
