Black Sabbath kicked off the Australian leg of their final ever tour over the weekend, playing two tight, 90-minute sets at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and Perth Arena. The reviews (and the set lists) are now in, and everyone agrees it’s a fitting farewell.
As anyone who knows anything about heavy metal will tell you, Sabbath basically invented the genre back in 1970 with the release of their eponymous debut album, which introduced the world to a new, dark, brooding take on rock and roll never before heard.
According to a review in The Australian, the band’s set at Perth Arena on Friday night “was tight and the riffs sounded as fresh and dangerous as they did when first heard decades ago”, proving Ozzy and the boys still have it even after almost 50 years.
One thing to note about the setlist is that it doesn’t feature any tracks from the band’s universally hailed last album, 13, and is instead comprised of older cuts from the band’s 1970s era, so you boomers out there will leave very happy.
Of course, Sabbath staples like ‘Paranoid’, ‘Iron Man’, ‘War Pigs’, and ‘Black Sabbath’ make appearances (there would be riots if they didn’t), but the band also slot in some surprising choices, like ‘Dirty Women’ from 1976’s Technical Ecstasy.
As Blabbermouth notes, the band recently announced they will be selling a new, limited edition CD titled The End during shows on their farewell tour, which features previously unheard studio tracks left off 13 and several live cuts.
