The Golden Globes were on last night and the stars were out in force, including a number of musicians who have recently lent their talent to the musical scores of a number of films. The awards ceremony last night pitted music royalty against each other with Madonna and Elton John going head-to-head for Best Original Song.
Also up for nominated was former-Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor who was up for Best Original Score for his work on the Hollywood adaptation of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Reznor, and his partner in crime Atticus Ross won the Golden Globe and the Oscar last year for their score to The Social Network.
The tension was high between Madonna and Elton John from the get go with the rocket man not holding back during an interview on the red carpet at the awards, telling a reporter “We’ve got a lot of competition. Madonna hasn’t got a fucking chance.” Laughing, the interviewer replied “Those are fighting words.” “No, they’re accurate words,” replied Elton.
But it was Madonna who would have the last laugh as she was announced as the winner of the Golden Globe for her song ‘Masterpiece’ from her upcoming film, W.E.
Elton’s camp whipped into overdrive almost immediately with his partner David Furnish jumping on Facebook to express his outrage at the decision. “Madonna. Best song???? F— off!!!” he wrote.
“Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit,” he wrote on Facebook. “Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is.”
But Madonna told ABC News she doesn’t bear any ill will on the star or his pitbull husband. “I hope (John) speaks to me for the next couple of years,” she said backstage. “He’s been known to get mad at me so I don’t know. He’s brilliant and I adore him so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad!”
Reznor also walked home empty handed after losing out to Ludovic Bource for his work on The Artist. The Golden Globe was Madonna’s second, following her 1997 win for best actress in a comedy or musical for Evita.
