In a major coup Alberts have signed Gotye, aka Wally De Backer, to a publishing deal with the company in Australia and New Zealand that includes his entire back catalogue of albums and songs.
According to Streetpress Australia the deal adds the rising star to an already impressive stable of artists such as Megan Washington, Malcolm and Angus Young from AC/DC, and Harry Vanda to name just a few. Gotye’s side-project, The Basics, has been with Alberts for a number of years now so the new deal gives the company all of De Backer’s songwriting material.
David Albert, CEO of Alberts said in a statement “We’re thrilled to have Wally’s Gotye works published by Alberts. We have a high respect for his creativity and integrity as a songwriter and artist and look forward to helping develop further prospects for all the wonderful Gotye songs.”
Gotye has been steadily rising in the Australian music scene for some time now with his first success coming from the single ‘Learnalilgivinanlovin’ off his sophomore album Like Drawing Blood which first drew the attention of the local scene.
His follow-up single from the record, ‘Hearts A Mess’, was even more popular and was voted in the top 10 in the Triple J Hottest 100 listeners poll of that year.
‘Like Drawing Blood’ went on to win the Triple J Album of the Year, AIR Most Outstanding New Independent Artist award, and scored Gotye the ARIA Best Male Artist nomination and finalist of the highly regarded Australian Music Prize (AMP) award.
His third album, Making Mirrors, which was released towards to end of last year has been both a critical and commercial success with his first single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ featuring vocalist Kimbra garnering over 44 million plays on Youtube.
The song went on to win numerous awards at the 2011 ARIA Awards including Single Of The Year, and Best Pop Release, with Gotye picking up the gong for Best Male Artist.
