Just a few days after Midnight Oil frontman turned politician Peter Garrett urged fellow Sydneysiders to go out and save the struggling live music scene we’ve heard word that the Gaelic Club will no longer be hosting live music.
A statement issued to FasterLouder by the venue read:
It is with heavy hearts as of 1st April 2012 The Gaelic will no longer be hosting live music.
The decision was a difficult one, made after a number of years in a tough climate for live music in Sydney venues. It joins the closure of other much-beloved venues for Sydney music lovers, including the Hopetoun in recent years.
We would like to thank all the bands, promoters, bookers and punters that have supported us over many years .There have been so many memorable shows in The Gaelic’s time, from The Drop Kick Murphies, The Strokes, Silverchair, The Pre Sets, Helmet to The Used, Ben Kweller, Bookshade and Henry Rollins spoken word
Venue manager Narissa Mathews said today, “We are sad to be closing the doors of another one of Sydney’s beloved music venues. The decision to do so was not an easy one and we’d like to sincerely thank all the artists, promoters, agents and most importantly – the fans – who have come through our doors over the years.”
The good news is, we still have one more month of great gigs lined up so stop by for a pint to say goodbye, or better yet come and see one of the great gigs we’re hosting, including The Freak and the Show Girl, Urge Overkill, DJ Quik, Spacetribe, The Art and Oscar Mulero.
The Gaelic will continue to trade as a bar and restaurant.
Live music venues across the country have been struggling recently and a number of icons have been forced to close their doors. In Melbourne the East Brunswick Club called last drinks for the final time and The Prince Bandroom seems to be holding on only by a thread after a restaurant group bought the Prince complex.
Also in the last two years Brisbane has lost The Troubadour, Sydney has lost Low Bar, Tone Bar, and The Hopetoun, and in Melbourne they lost The Arthouse, and The Public Bar.
