So it turns out one of the Splendour In The Grass 2012 lineup additions may have been a tad premature, after we spoke to Django Django who were put into the ‘confirmed’ pile and they told us there is merely ‘talk’ of them coming to Australia.
On Monday the media was whipped into a frenzy after Noise11 reported that they had spoken to the band at SXSW and the members had let it slip that they were confirmed for Splendour after being booked for Fuji Rock in Japan.
The alleged plan was for the British psychedelic quartet to journey down under after their short visit to Japan after playing alongside the likes of Jack White, At The Drive-In, The Shins, the Stone Roses and Radiohead.
But when we spoke to Django Django they were more conservative. When asked if they’re coming to Australia the band replied “I really hope so. It depends on how the record does when it comes out there. It seems to be the talk that we’ll be visiting.”
Hardly a confirmation. But the deal was really sealed when the band posted on their official Facebook page “Hey we don’t have anything confirmed yet in Australia. We’d love to come over though.”
In the meantime we do have one confirmed act, Zulu Winter, and you can be sure they’re booked because the confirmation came from Secret Sounds, the sister company to Splendour In The Grass.
For the rest of the lineup we’ll have to wait a few weeks still, although there are some credible rumours making the rounds that should give us some idea of what to expect.
The Shins for instance let slip they’re due to play Splendour, although at this stage they’re only ‘pencilled in’. A few other names such as Lana Del Rey, Sleigh Bells, and The Ting Tingshave also been suggested although none of the acts have responded to the rumours.
Jack White is also tipped by many pundits after he was announced for Fuji Rock in Japan. According to Triple J’s Zan Rowe, who caught up with former White Stripes frontman at SXSW to talk about his debut solo record,White will definitely be touring his solo stuff down under soon and Splendour looks as good as time as any.
