Excited fans of reformed Irish band The Cranberries left disappointed last night in Sydney after singer Dolores O’Riordan failed to show up for the gig.
The Enmore Theatre was packed to the brim with excited fans, some of which had paid to see The Cranberries last time they were here in 95 and must have had serious deja vu – the band cancelled back then too.
Of particular annoyance to many fans is that no announcement prior to the event was made, and nothing was said to punters while support band Bonjah played to the sold out crowd.
But when it came time for The Cranberries to appear there was nothing but confusion coming from the stage. Eventually one of the band members walked onstage and announced that “our singer hasn’t shown up” and that was the end of it.
The official line is that Dolores was suffering from food poisoning and was unable to perform. A message posted on the bands facebook page today reiterated the story saying:
We want to apologise for tonight’s last minute cancellation at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney. It was unavoidable, and we’re very sorry. Dolores is suffering from food poisoning and was unable to perform.
Right up to the last minute we were hoping the show might be able to go ahead, but Dolores was just too unwell. We know you’re all very disappointed and this has been a huge inconvenience for you.
Hopefully most of you can make the re-scheduled show. Once again, we’re very, very sorry…
A rescheduled show has been booked for Monday 26th March, and a large number of wellwishers have flooded The Cranberries’ Facebook page to wish Dolores a speedy recovery. But with some fans travelling interstate just the see the band not everyone is happy to give the band a second chance.
“For those who have idolized the group for 15 years and flew up from Melbourne only for the show to be cancelled, it really sucks,” wrote Michelle Coleiro who attended last nights concert. “Yeah we will get a refund, big whoop, too bad my dreams got shattered last night.”
“We flew in from Adelaide especially with our 6 year old son,” wrote Rachael Erdis. “He cried the whole way back to the hotel. Sorry we can’t come back Monday, and I don’t think my son would want to either.”
“Not impressed,” wrote Duncan Gibson who also had tickets to the cancelled 95 concert. “No one for the band could come out and announce it? Do you even respect your fans? I will never buy another record. That’s twice now. Your music use to mean so much.”
All tickets purchased for last nights show are transferrable to the new show. If ticket holders are unable or don’t wish to attend the rescheduled show, refunds will be available from the point of purchase.
