You can always rely on The Flaming Lips to out weird themselves and what better time than for Record Store Day which is coming up in a few weeks on April 21st.
A few weeks back the essentric musicians led by their fearless frontman Wayne Coyne revealed that they’ll be releasing a limited edition vinyl just for the day that includes a number of collaborations with a wide variety of musicians such as Bon Iver, Nick Cave, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Ke$ha, Neon Indian, Erykah Badu, and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker.
Now they’ve revealed in an interview with MTV that in addition to the vinyl release a number of extremely limited edition discs will be made available that will contain blood collected from each of the collaborators.
Yes, you read that right. If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a part of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon then it is Christmas and your Birthday all wrapped up into one messed up holiday. No doubt those same people who bought The Flaming Lips’ gummy foetus or their human skull are already placing their orders.
Speaking to MTV, Coyne revealed: “What I’m going to try to do – and I’m collecting stuff for it as we speak – is I’m going to try to make a record that has every person’s blood in the record.”
“I don’t have everybody’s blood just yet, but I collected quite a few vials of blood and it’s actually sitting in my refrigerator as we speak… I’m going to try to take that same concept and put little bits of everybody’s blood in the middle of this record. Like a glass specimen thing.”
Apparently Coyne has so far collected blood from Neon Indian, Prefuse 73 and Ke$ha. Kevin Parker from Tame Impala is apparently trying to get his blood to Coyne but is having a bit of trouble.
“If anyone in Paris has any way of extracting blood out of my flesh and into a container without killing me so that I may give it to a deranged psych rocker to put INTO his band’s album, then please let me know,” he wrote on Facebook.
Only five or six blood discs will be made says Coyne, and he hopes that the limited edition discs will bought by “interested rich Flaming Lips people”.
