It’s always an interesting proposition to hear bands from non-English speaking countries take on musical genres that, as Westerners, we know and love.

Think of where Sweden’s The Hives have taken rock and roll, or what Germany’s Rammstein have done with industrial metal. Such is the case with Chinese band Hedgehog on their fifth long player, Sum Fun Gun.

The three piece were formed in 2005 and consist of vocalist/drummer Atom, bassist Box and guitarist/vocalist Zo, their sound could be described as a glorious and messy mash up of many strands and styles of indie.

One can hear everything from Eastern pop to My Bloody Valentine in the soundscape Hedgehog create. Singing in both Chinese and English, the trio really give it their all on tracks like “Heart On Fire”, “Surf With Shark” and “Black Kiss”.

“Choose Whatever You Want All The Time”, apart from almost being an anthem for Generation Y, really shows a huge potential that Hedgehog possess that could bring them to a wider audience.

The band will be touring these shores later this month. On the evidence of Sum Fun Gun, their quirky and left of centre approach and style will surely bring them some new fans and converts.
