Ever wondered what it sound like if you stuck legendary Australian guitarist Spencer P Jones, James Baker of The Scientists and Hoodoo Gurus fame, along with gnarled poet Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin of the Drones in a room together?
Well, soon enough we’ll have some actual music to replace our imagination.
As previously reported, it was The Drones frontman Gareth Liddiard that first let slip in a Tone Deaf interview back in February of the new pedigree rich group, saying “we’re just making an album really, but it’s heaps of fun.”
What could have been a one-off collaborative event has turned into something more committed, with the quartet reconvening “twice more over the next year,” according to a statement from the band, to put together “an intense collage of Jones’ tales of love, betrayal and emotional turmoil,” described as “a journey through the brooding recesses of the human psyche.”
The Drones/Beast of Bourbon connection doesn’t stop there.
When the former were announced as the curators for the newly returned Australian formation of All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) of I’ll Be Your Mirror for Melbourne, they also seemed to get the seeming impossible Beasts of Bourbon reunion to happen. Confirming previous rumours of the original lineup of Tex Perkins, Spencer P Jones, Kim Salmon, James Baker and Boris Sujfovic – getting the band back together for The Drones-curated event.
The two-day music event, the first in Australia since it’s last (and only) incarnation in the 2009 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds curated iteration, also features a dream lineup that includes the long-awaited return of My Bloody Valentine, the first ever visit from Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and a host of eminent noise rock, industrial luminaries and left-field local artists.
To be held at Altona’s Westgate Entertainment Centre in Februrary 2013, the Sunday’s music bill is a day curated by The Drones, with the newly reformed Beasts of Bourbon in support, which means that all four members of Spencer P Jones and the Nothing Butts will be in attendance, and in close proximity. We’re not saying to expect a supergroup showing at the event, but we’re also saying – don’t rule it out…
