Ever wonder what would happen if you stuck Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin from The Drones in a room with James Baker from Beasts Of Bourbon and Hoodoo Gurus and renowned Melbourne guitarist Spencer P. Jones?
You may not have to wonder much longer as Liddiard revealed in an interview exclusively to Tone Deaf that the yet-to-be-named new project will be his next focus as he prepares for a headline solo show in his hometown Melbourne.
“I just did that; the thing by myself – I don’t want to do that twice in a row,” Liddiard revealed when asked if he’d write another solo record. “So this is The Drones, I need a band to flesh these out. It’s still in an early state.”
Liddiard then revealed that while his new material is destined for another Drones record he has been distracted by work on the supergroup project. “It’s Fiona Kitschin and me, with James Baker and Spencer P. Jones. We’re just making an album really, but it’s heaps of fun.”
Although it’s totally cringeworthy to use the word supergroup in this instance we’re not really sure anyone else has come up with a better word so we’re going to use it.
No details on when the record might see the light of day were forthcoming, but we’ll take this thoroughly Aussie rock n roll group any day over Lou Reed and Metallica, Insane Clown Posse and Jack White, Jimmy Barnes and some unknown house music DJ, or The Doors with Skrillex.
