Wipe those images of sea dwelling pet salamanders far from your mind and embrace emerging Melbourne band AXOLOTL. Autonomy will sweep you away with its layered electronica and larger-than-life feel.

From the very first track it’s clear why this band are beginning to cause a stir. ‘Mother’ sets the dramatic tone of their debut EP with the hauntingly sweet vocals of Ella Thompson set against striking electronic instrumentals.

Gorgeous vocals and soaring instrumentals showcase the creative talent of AXOLOTL and their ability to create a unique sound inspired by the likes of Little Dragon, Grizzly Bear and Bjork.

‘Wonder’ deserves a mention for its dark and (pardon the pun) wondrous feel, which is moulded nicely by fluctuating tones and an eerily catchy chorus.

The lighter songs on the record are equally as captivating. ‘Electricity’ screams electro-pop whilst ‘Bird On The Line’ (feat. local vocalist/musician Sam Lawrence) is a stellar addition that draws attention to subtle husky harmonies alongside rolling drumbeats.

At times it loosely feels like there’s a little too much going on, however such moments would best be described as polished chaos rather than attributed to poor production.

The debut release from AXOLOTL is in no way a collection of sing-a-longs, rather an experience that will have you ready to groove. It’s hard to tell what’s next for this group in terms of a full-length release but judging by the quality of their EP it will most likely be worth keeping an eye (and ear) out for.
