Electric Empire may well be Australia’s best-kept secret.
While finding much acclaim abroad and gracing international arenas such as the iconic Glastonbury Festival, and the heralded stage of Royal Albert Hall, the four-piece are yet to find the same level of success in their home country.
Changin’ is the follow-up to the band’s self-titled debut album and features four slick songs that fuse together the best elements of soul and funk.
The title track is a groove-infused, dance-floor ready opener, displaying sharp guitar work and crooning vocals that playfully deliver flirtatious lines.
‘Taking It High’ is driven by infectious keyboard sounds and addictive hooks, creating a catchy and thoroughly enjoyable four minutes of contemporary soul music.
All four members contribute vocals at various points in the EP, each adding their own intricate, diverse dynamics to the tracks, with drummer Jason Heerah’s stunningly smooth and infectious voice constantly shining through the mix.
Changin’is rounded off with the added treat of a live version of ‘Love’, a track from their previous album.
The quartet’s music is best displayed in a live setting and this rendition showcases the energy and enthusiasm that is in abundance at the band’s performances.
With another impressive release under their belt, Electric Empire prove that with their level of quality, they probably won’t be remaining a secret in their native country for much longer.
Electric Empire play Peats Ridge Festival before year’s end and Woodford Folk Festival in January 2013.
