You’d be forgiven for thinking Alotta Presha come from across the ditch.
They certainly have that kiwi dub flavour akin to Kora, Fat Freddy’s Drop, and Katchafire. However, these eight dudes are in fact from ‘the gong’ (Wollongong) and as their self-titled EP unwraps, it becomes obvious the tunes they make are directly influenced by their home.
Aside from looking like a bunch of surf rats and giving each other nicknames like Dubby Waters, Life Aquatic and Dub Pirate, their music smacks of life on the eastern seaboard.
It is a blend of surf rock and reggae/dub, a style The Beautiful Girls flirted with in their time and recent triple j faves Sticky Fingers are exploring, but taken to the next level with the brass and keys our kiwi counterparts often incorporate.
It’s easy to imagine rubbing shoulders on the Alotta Presha dance floor with surfers, hippies and reggae fans alike. Heck, this dance floor would ideally be in Byron or Freo!
The scene is set for bass heavy grooves, languid skank, and percussive rhythm techniques.
Plus with this many band members/instruments, there are plenty of licks and fills playing off each other in any single song, not to mention the poetic lyricism on tracks like “Nonetheless” and wobble bass on “No Probs”.
Being the height of summer, the unhurried flow of this EP perfectly matches the lethargy the heat brings. So, put this on and crack a cold drink.
