Californian quintet Milo Greene brilliantly capture their colourful, sunny brand of indie-folk in their self-titled LP.
At times the band reaches an aural aesthetic similar to that of Fleet Foxes and Of Monsters Of Men, which is in itself an indication of their quality.
Similar to these big names, Milo Greene utilize the vocals of four members to construct layered, dreamy harmonies to create their self-described ‘cinematic-pop’ sound.
Album opener “What’s The Matter” gently lulls listeners into the record with faded, looped vocals and gentle acoustic instrumentals, but despite its fragility it stands out as one of their best sonic soundscapes.
Sophie Moore, the lone female member of the band, gives the album one of its brightest moments with “Perfectly Aligned”, where she takes centre stage and a spotlight is shone on the ethereal quality of her voice.
Showing their diversity, Milo Greene also show they can morph their acoustic stylings into upbeat, folk-pop catharsis.
On tracks such as “Cutty Love” and lead single “1957”, the quintet fasten their guitar strumming and wield clapping sticks and tambourines.
It’s tracks like these that are the most enjoyable and most memorable. When the tempo lifts, the band’s gypsy-like spirit is so palpable and infectious that you can’t help but hum along to their rapturous chants.
The album draws to a slow close on “Autumn Tree” with the final lyrics “linger on, linger on” fittingly describing the album’s lasting effect – Milo Greene’s blissful acoustic sound continues to loop in your head after the final notes float away.
