Five-piece metalcore band Feed Her To The Sharks from Melbourne have released their independent sophomore record Savage Seas, a follow-up to The Beauty of Falling.
The mysterious keyboard opener to the title track develops until vocalist Andrew Vanderzalm introduces the band as they belt out ferocious breakdowns and the gruffest of growls.
The deeply tuned and distorted riffs with steadily pounding drums create a melodic atmosphere behind the chaotic surface.
‘Memory Of You’ emerges a chorus with hooks and clean vocals between the bass-dropping verses. The contrast between the bellowing roars and the melodic, clean vocals define the genre the band describe themselves as melodic metalcore.
Australian bands seeking attention and recognition generally emit a patriotic aura about themselves in terms of where in the country they emerged.
About half-way through the album, the track ‘F**k Melbourne’ rolls through as Vanderzalm describes it as a wasteland. The song may receive interesting responses from the Victorian metal fans but must have been important enough for the band to record it.
Despite its controversy, the song holds death metal elements which is controlled and transformed into a metalcore masterpiece with a head-banging chorus filled with breakdowns.
‘Buried Alive’ was the teaser track to fans in the lead-up to release. It defines Savage Seas fairly accurately with its explosive nature and energetic dimension of chaos and brutality. The chorus is really catchy and maintains the band’s melodic delivery.
Feed Her To The Sharks are likely to get signed with a record label after releasing the beast that is, Savage Seas.
