It is no wonder that Comfort manage to encapsulate the spirit of being young and carefree so effortlessly, featuring ten well-crafted tunes that conjure up images of an idyllic summer.
Sasha Carlson (guitar/vocals) met Toto Vivian (guitar/keyboards/backing vocals) during summer holidays in the fun-drenched Byron Bay.
Their holidays continued in London, where they were joined by Thomas Beal (bass) and Jacob Moore (drums) to form Splashh.
Album opener, the aptly titled “Headspins” sets the tone with thick distortions, heavy basslines and just enough amount of nineties grunge feel to send the listener on a mind trip.
They are quite deft in combining lush pop melodies, infectious guitar riffs, bold rhythms and ethereal vocal reverb, creating a laidback and wistful atmosphere throughout the record. All of these elements come together best in the album’s standout track, “So Young”.
Splashh manage to showcase hints of their influences consistently without allowing their songs to sound repetitive. “Need It”, “Feel Like You” and “Lost Your Cool” skew towards a cosmic wave of psychedelic rock, while their shoegaze influences are evident on “All I Wanna Do” and “Strange Fruit”.
Another highlight is the single, “Vacation” which invites you to escape into a perpetual holiday daze as Carlson sings “I wanna go where nobody knows”.
A sweet nostalgic snapshot of eternal summer that highlights the foursome’s potential in just over 30 minutes, Comfort warrants repeat plays.
