Just when we thought Empire Of The Sun couldn’t possibly be any dumber, they go and do something like this… and totally redeem themselves! Yes, that’s right. The Aussie electronic duo have reportedly signed on to score the upcoming sequel to classic 90s comedy film Dumb And Dumber.

Comprised of Sleepy Jackson’s Luck Steele and PNAU’s Nick Littlemore, Empire Of The Sun have just released their second album Ice On The Dune, the long-awaited follow-up to their million unit-selling, ARIA conquering debut, Walking On A Dream.

Now the two-piece will be making their first foray into film by producing the score to the forthcoming sequel reports The Huffington Post. Empire of the Sun’s music also appeared in the 2011 comedy Hall Pass starring Jason Sudeikis, Owen Wilson and Jenna Fischer.

Written and directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly, the original Dumb And Dumber came out in 1994 and starred Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as dimwitted friends on a road trip.

The sequel, officially titled Dumb And Dumber To, brings back stars Carrey and Daniels as well as the Farrelly Brothers who wrote and directed the original. Further details on the project are scant, but we can only assume it will be an improvement on the movie making massacre that was 2003 prequel, Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, which did not feature the original stars or any involvement from the Farrelly Brothers.

News of Empire Of The Sun’s involvement was broken by the Farrelly brothers on Twitter.

But the score for Dumb And Dumber isn’t the only new music Empire Of The Sun are working on. Luke Steele revealed in an interview in May that the group have already begun writing for their third album.

Steele is also keeping creative working with longtime friend, Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns, on a new album loosely “inspired by African music”, with the result “sounding a bit like The Clash, [a]bit Talking Heads.” Steele noting it’s “good to do some tougher, kind of hard-edge kind of stuff”.

Following the Vivid LIVE shows, Empire Of The Sun hit America for an appearance at Bonnaroo Festival and an American tour before returning home in July, playing a part in the mammoth Splendour In The Grass 2013 lineup, alongside other Australian acts with 2013 releases, including Bernard Fanning, The Drones, Cloud Control, Boy & Bear, The Growl, Birds of Tokyo, Songs, The Chemist and many more.

The Empire Of The Sun live show then rolls overseas once more, with appearances at LA’s HARD Summer Music Festival, Hungary’s Sziget Festival, the Wilderness Festival in London, Lowlands in The Netherlands, and the the Jay-Z-curated Made In America Festival.
