A Shelley Segal Australian Tour 2013 has been announced for the Melbourne singer, songwriter and international touring artist, and she’s announced she’ll be bringing notable American jazz guitarist and vocalist Adam Levy out to Australia to tour their new collaborative album, Little March which was released in Australia in March, and the US last month.
Performing at some of the country’s best-known jazz clubs, the duo will be hitting up Bennett’s Lane (Melbourne) with full backing band for two shows on July 26 and August 6, and Blue Beat (Sydney) for a show on August 1.
A highly sought after jazz guitarist, Levy has played with some of the genre’s best including Norah Jones (with whom he played and toured for more than six years), Ani Difranco, Tracy Chapman, Rosanne Cash, Lisa Loeb and more. With several of his own albums under his belt, Levy is also an educator and regular writer for Guitar Player magazine and Acoustic Guitar magazine and is the author of Jazz Guitar Sight Reading (book) and Play the Right Stuff (book and DVD).
And then there’s Segal who has just returned home from an extensive three month US tour. She’s been performing across the Australian and international scene for the last decade and has released two albums to date with a third due out in early 2014. Segal also recently wrote and recorded a track, Chemistry, for DJ Carl Cox, which spent two weeks at #1 on the dance charts last year.
Segal and Levy’s collaboration, Little March is an album brimming with soulful, expressive intelligent songs that navigate through jazz, folk and blues with tender affection and great artistry. The album was written in New York where Levy was living at the time, recorded in Los Angeles and produced by the Grammy-winning, Husky (Fiona Apple, Tom Waits, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones). Lead single Stuck In The Memory highlights Segal’s impressive writing and vocal ability as she stylishly slinks through this jazz number that will have you singing along after just one listen.
The album’s opening duet track, Glad you asked “Is a sweet folky song about the difference we can make through kindness to others – ‘To remind me that the winter never lasts’,” explains Shelley through quoting the song’s lyrics. “It’s an honour to play with Adam. As well as being so incredibly talented, he is the loveliest guy in the world. It is going to be a really special tour. Hopefully we’ll get to write some new songs on the road as well.”
Tickets to the shows are on sale now and the album Little March is out now through True Music.
