Following on from the recent success of the Melbourne Community Cup 2013, with the football and music event drawing its biggest ever crowds, who witnessed a draw between the Megahertz and the Espy Rockdogs for the second year running and the third time ever in the annual event’s 16-year history – Sydney is now getting its turn.

Following its launch in March 2012, the first details of the Reclink Community Cup’s return to Sydney have emerged, set to take place at Marrickville’s Henson Park on Sunday 25th August and feature a day’s worth of musical entertainment and the all-important Aussie rules match between the Sydney Sailors and the Western Walers.

Last year the Sailors, led by team captain Adam Spencer and featuring Triple J Breakfast’s Alex Dyson and Tom Ballard, media personalities Rhys Muldoon, Scott Dooley, and Merrick Watts in its ranks, claimed victory with a nine point lead over the Western Walers, the Dan Sultan-led team of local musicians featuring members of The Mess Hall, Philadelphia Grand Jury, and Wiggle Anthony Field.

The theme for the 2012 match was ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ with pre-match sets and a half time show from the likes of Front End Loader, The Meanies, and The Celibate Rifles.

The 2013 theme is yet to be finalised, as well as the players involved in the central face-off on the footy field, but the Sydney Community Cup’s official Facebook page confirms that there will be “four rocking bands” on hand to perform on the day.

Entry is a single gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to Reclink, a community organisation that provides sport and arts programs to enrich the lives of disadvantaged individuals.

This year the Melbourne Community Cup raised more than $100,000 for Reclink along with live sets from Beasts of Bourbon, Tim Rogers, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and the similarly modelled Sydney edition looks set for another day of fundraising fun, footy, and music.
