Your Facebook profile includes the very tantalising statement of ‘news on the way’. We’ll assume it has something to do with new music. Album or EP? Expected release date? What does it sound like? We’re hungry for the details!
We have left our profile with news on the way because we are waiting for everything to be set in stone before releasing any information. We are excited to admit there’s not long now before a release and we will be selling a limited release at the upcoming shows. The new stuff is romantically gritty. Like Roy Orbison wrapped in plastic in the back of David Lynch’s Cadillac. It just sounds like Cabins with some fast and some slow.
You just recently posted an unofficial video for ‘Golden To Touch’ on the web. Tell us about that track.
We never actually intended on making a video for ‘Golden To Touch’. Jack and I were digging through old stock footage to make a video for another single we were going to release but the footage just seemed to match with the frustration and desperation of ‘Golden To Touch’. So we pieced it together and put it along side the track that way.
It has been a few years since your mini album Bright Victory was released. What have you been up to since?
We were really quite young when we recorded and released Bright Victory. We had all only just left high school. I guess since we have just being learning on tour, writing, recording and changing bass players/line up. I guess just growing musically as corny as that sounds.
You must be yearning to put a new release out. Has making new music been an arduous process?
We love recording and making music. The only arduous part is trying to find people you feel are on the same page. People you can trust comfortably and are willing to back you as an artist.
How does the new material differ from your older songs?
We experimented a lot this time around with synths and other sounds. Also our influences have changed a great deal since Bright Victory. Given we were so young we hadn’t heard half the music we love now. The lyrics for the new material are much more meaningful to me. I found it easier to express myself this time around. We recorded a couple of ballads which we have never done before. We weren’t afraid to go soft but still a lot of tracks have that rumbling Cabins rhythm section and harsh tones. Bright Victory was recorded really delicately plus we had a budget to work with. All the new tracks we funded ourselves and recorded a lot of it live. We got some amazing sounds thanks to Tim of Hanging Tree Studios and Wade Keighran.
The track ‘Catcher In The Rye’ obviously took a few cues from the J.D. Salinger novel. Have there been any other Holden Caufield style characters or in fact any literature at all to influence your new music?
‘Catcher In The Rye’, despite its title, is not actually based on Holden Caulfield or J.D Salinger but more based on David Mark Chapman, the man who shot John Lennon who was reading the book at the time. There are no real literary quotes in any of the new material.
You’re currently on tour with Royston Vasie. What have the shows been like so far? Any stand out moments you wish to mention?
So far shows have been amazing. The Royston Vasie guys are absolute gentlemen and they put on a great show. We all get along really well. There have been many highlights. I guess going to Wet n Wild between the Brisbane and Byron shows. Also when I broke one of their guitars on Brin’s face during their set at the Sydney show was funny. All members of the party do not regret a thing by the way!
On top of that you’re supporting Cold War Kids on their Splendour sideshows. Exciting news! You must be pretty pumped for that?
We are super pumped for the Cold War Kids shows. We have played with them before and can’t wait to see those guys again. We will have an ep to sell at those shows too!
What are your plans for the rest of 2013?
Release the album, tour a lot, and record at the end of the year! Also our friend was given a camera from Spike Jonze so we plan to mess around with that and make some videos while he still has it.
Where we can see you play next, what releases do you have available and where can we get them?
For all our upcoming shows find us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram as Cabinsband. There’s a whole lot of other shit on their too!
