Another week, another mixtape! This time around we’ve got some rippers too. Kicking things off is our feature track, from Glasgow band Glasvegas, before we mix things up (quite literally) with a new tune from Sampology. Cooling things off a notch is a brand new song from the ever-surfy Loon Lake and the first official single from Sydney band Gang Of Youths. We’ve also got some indie-pop from Eskimo Joe, and Hey Geronimo, some country from Belle & The Bone People, and a little folk from Malpas. Check it all out.
Glasvegas – ‘If’
Across three and a bit (pesky mini-albums) released, Glasvegas’ widescreen brand of yearning indie rock has morphed little, but given the stoic formula they set out with, that’s no bad thing. Continuing the ‘Phil Spector producing Jesus & Mary Chain’ affiliations, ‘If’ carries James Allan’s Scottish yelp (that’s as broad as the Liffy) atop a marching verse-to-crashing chorus structure, with a few lines dedicated to Talking Heads’ ‘Road To Nowhere’ for good measure.
Sampology – ‘Dancehall Queen’
Australia’s favourite AV DJ Sampology is back with a new single Dancehall Queen, teaming up with local up and comer DJ Butcher and Grammy Award winning vocalist Beenie Man creating a cross pollination between reggae and club music, which is bold an unlike anything else anyone is doing on a cross over level. Armed with a new AV show ‘Stimulation’ Sampology is hitting the road to tantalize your eyes and ears.
Loon Lake – ‘Carolina’
‘Carolina’ is the first taste of the upcoming debut album Gloamer from Melbourne surf rockers Loon Lake, still wearing his heart on his sleeve lead singers Sam’s lyrics reflect heartache for a possible lost love, teamed with loads of trademark ‘oohs’ and ‘ahh’s’ and an overall a more grown up sound with a bit of a Weezer vibe heard in fuzzed out guitars and still catchy as all hell!
Gang Of Youths – ‘Evangelists’
The first official single from this Sydney band is polished indie rock to the core. With a consistent mellow pace Gang Of Youths sound like a band that stole their singer from a country outfit. The deep vocals permeate as touches of synth play an underlying role. The song reaches a small but significant climax as the electronics heat up and the vocals become earnest. It’s a solid first showing for Gang Of Youths, but there’s still plenty of mystery surrounding this up and coming act.
Malpas –’Charlemagne’
This track by the Birmingham duo is the first taster of their debut EP, Promise, due to land on September 23rd. With a folk base ‘Charlemagne’ soon launches into off kilter electronics with looped ‘oohs’ creating a dreamy atmosphere. Malpas’ mix of organic and electronic components creates an engaging track that does its best to reveal its subtleties.
Eskimo Joe – ‘Got What You Need’
As an oscillating synth flutters over Kav Temperley’s honeyed falsetto and a Pirouette of shiny keys, it’s plainly obvious that the Perth trio have discovered the joys of electronic-shaped pop for the creation of their crowdfunded studio album, Wastelands. The trimmings may seem different, but the core hooks and user-friendly appeal that regularly floats Eskimo Joe to the top of the charts is still there.
Belle & The Bone People – ‘The Boy’
The country-heavy sound of Belle & The Bone People serves as a refreshing change from most other new music coming out of Sydney. While the banjo-centric instrumentation is a ripper, the real joy of the tune of hearing lead singer Isabella Kearney-Nurse’s voice shine. The very best part of the five-piece though? Their average age is still only 20, which means there is still a lot more to come from these talented young things.
Hey Geronimo – ‘Lazer Gun Show’
True to its name, the new track from Hey Geronimo sees the indie boys subtly foray into the world of all things electro with a repetitive key line that adds another dimension to the already heavily layered song. With experimental instrumentation and vocal harmonies to boot, this is bound to see a lot of play come the warmer months. The boys are also smack bang in the middle of their tour so if you’re digging the high energy tune, check ’em out live!
