The Sinking Teeth’s EP White Water opens up fiercely. ‘The Sexy Mates’ low, wide bass line folds into pounding, rolling drums, with shrill guitars sitting appropriately on top. Nick Manuell is a versatile vocalist and he can both sing and scream without ever sounding forced.
Each of the three members claim very different influences from each other, and this is apparent in the EP. Despite offering only five tracks, the Melbournian outfit sweep wide in their musical scope. The Sinking Teeth embrace a variety of styles. Their flashes of metal and punk are solid, but their progressive rock’n’roll sounds much more natural to the group.
The single ‘Temporary Living’ is well-crafted, driving and anthemic, closing out the EP nicely. However, the group really excel when the rhythm section clamp down on a thick groove (see ‘Tongues’). The drums and bass lock in together like a pair of grimy Duplo blocks that, by some beautiful fluke, found each other in between couch pillows.
A tenuous metaphor, perhaps. Nevertheless, these guys do a good job of showing you exactly why Melbourne is such an exciting place to be checking out music. Expect more good things from this group.
