If you’re looking to become immersed into an endless hypnotic trance of alternative rock, then grab a hold of this Perth band’s debut record, All We Didn’t Know.
Warning: when listening to this extended play, make sure you make out the location of the ‘Replay’ button – you’ll need it.
The four-piece band casually takes listeners back to the ’90s with All We Didn’t Know, offering a youthful homage to the grunge subculture.
The powerful influence of the traditional rock instrumentation is beautifully balanced with the delicate vocals of lead singer, Sophie Hopes, as her quirky charm creates hypnotic harmonies with the captivating guitar work.
Although this balance lacks the emotion and expression that the intense lyrics suggest, this impassiveness could add to the careless and relaxed indie-rock vibes which the band thrives on.
Instead, there is a heavy reliance on repetition within both the rhythms and melodies, as well as the lyrics. Such simplicity allows the sheer musical talent of the band speak for itself.
Tired Lion‘s EP begins with ‘You Just Don’t See It’, where eerie bass work, droney electric guitar slurs and flirtatious vocals thrive. This shifts to the powerful drum and guitar work in ‘Are You Listening… Listener?’, offering an infectious guitar melody that can easily make it on the mainstream market.

The last two tracks, Too Much Of Nothing’ and ‘Little Girl’ offer a more melancholy tone, encompassing a heavy, yet healthy reliance on lengthy vocals and a much slower tempo.
The main attraction to this extended play is the third track, ‘Desperate’, as its upbeat tempo throughout each verse, catchy chorus and strong vocals all make it a song to keep your ears open for on the radio.
Across only five tracks, Tired Lion manages to demonstrate their talent; channelling a casual ’90s grunge, merged with dainty, yet striking vocals.
