Thanks to events like Falls Festival, and Beyond The Valley Australians are spoilt for choice when it comes to quality NYE music events.
However while the aforementioned festivals have fine weather to characterise their days Snowglobe festival aims to warm the spirits of our American friends by gathering around 12,000 people in the outdoors of South Lake Tahoe’s Community College Campus with over 50 of the world’s best electronic music makers and DJs.
Much like the juxtaposing Christmases of the Northern and Southern hemispheres Snowglobe is a ‘white’ festival with its name aptly describing the surrounds. With tall trees covered in snow flakes never has the thought of an outdoor festival in the middle of winter seem less cold than it did gorgeous.
As you’ll see below the 2014 event is one of Snowglobe’s most impressive lineups yet, headlined by our very own Flume and a selection of the world’s best DJs and electronic acts this year’s crop will send out some fine beats across 9000 acres and three stages.
It follows previous bills where the likes of Deadmua5, Chromeo, Polica, Childish Gambino, Bassnectar and Theophilus London amongst many others have all been booked by Snowglobe
With a large percentage of the audience fitting in the age bracket of 18-30 year olds, punters have more than enough energy to keep warm by busting some moves in the mosh. While the main stage is exposed to the open air, the Sierra Tent and Techibeats Tent provide shelter for sky weary attendees.
They say that everybody should experience a white Christmas at least once in their lives and the same could be said for reveling in a snow-covered festival. It’s an experience that’s miles away from any event Down Under and there are few festivals that take advantage of less than ideal weather and manage to pull it off as Snowglobe does.
Check out the video below if you need further convincing and read on to discover our quick 5 step guide to the event.
1. Book Ahead Before It’s Too Late
Snowglobe Music Festival is situated at the exquisite South Lake Tahoe, California on the Lake Tahoe Community College Campus and will take place from the 29th of December to the 31st. Tickets are on sale now with the Advanced tickets and shuttle bundle setting you back you US $199 (that’s about $228 AUD), while GA tickets + shuttle -which should be available soon are valued at $216. GA VIP tickets are worth $399 if you’re looking for some extra comforts. Just head on down to your closest travel agent or do some online research and book those flights!
2. How To Get There
There are a number of American airports you could fly to, however the closest is the Reno International Airport. From there the easiest way to get to South Lake Tahoe is via the South Tahoe Express. This transport service departs from the airport and arrives at South Lake Tahoe Resorts with a return trip setting you back around $55. Book your reservation here.
Once in South Lake Tahoe getting to the festival is as easy as catching the Snowglobe Shuttle which runs from the Montbleu Casino Resort and Spa frequently an hour before the festival begins and an hour after it finishes each night. A shuttle pass is worth around $25.
Otherwise punters can take the city’s free public transportation system Bluego with information on routes and timetables accessible via their website here.
3. All The Accommodation Information You Need To Know
While there are various accommodation options in South Lake Tahoe ticket holders should book in quick to avoid missing out. There are more hotels, inns and lodges rather than hostels. However the following are some of the best spots to stay in in the town.
Check out Paradice Motel, The Deerfield Lodge At Heavenly, Alder Inn, Basecamp Hotel, Mark Twain Lodge and 7 Seas Inn at Tahoe for more details.
In 2014 Snowglobe is offering lodging packages for various accommodation locations in South Lake Tahoe. Check out the details here.
4. From ATMs To Clothing Advice, Here’s Some Extra Tips
Unlike our sunburnt NYE festivals, Snowglobe is at the chillier end of the spectrum as is glaringly obvious. While mosh pits and festival crowds can get stuffy that doesn’t mean you should avoid bringing warm jackets, gloves, snowboots and beanies. The festival warns that pockets may be searched upon entry so you may need to leave the alcohol at home for this one.
Unlike some festivals Snowglobe doesn’t transport you to the technology free dark ages. While we can’t vouch for the quality of phone or internet reception there are ATMs on site so there is no need to carry big wads of cash with you at all times.
Afraid of the cold weather dampening your spirits? No need to worry there is over 10,000 square feet set aside for enclosed spaces with heating.
5. Best Of The Rest: What Else Makes Snowglobe Amazing?
Plenty. Aside from the music there are other little features that set Snowglobe Festival apart from the rest and those include ice sculptures such as the Snowglobe throne, an incredibly fireworks display, live ‘Big Air’ snowboard and skiing demonstrations, the Heavenly Mountain lift for some spectacular views and a silent disco held in tipis.
