Hi I’m oh land! I’m a singer songwriter from Denmark and I love small instruments – and everything that can make a sound! Once I walked all around Copenhagen and recorded all the bicycle bells I came by! People like to call my music electronic indie pop but to me it’s astronaut ballerina pop! I imagine two skeletons dancing in outer space ! That’s why I called my new album wish bone- wishes and dreams live endlessly amongst the stars- in contrast to our very mortal and physical body that is only here temporarily. It’s about that fight between your dreams and reality.
You’ve just released your third album, Wish Bone, internationally how does it differ from your previous releases?
It’s more minimal sounding. My vocal is more in the forefront and it spans over more moods than the previous! I have silent ballads that are completely stripped down and them super bouncy hip hop leaning tracks. But it all comes from me- all aspects of my personality.
You worked on the album with quite a few collaborators, including Australia’s very own Sia. What was it like to write with her?
Sia is an incredible song writer and singer and her personality is as big as her voice. We have a lot of fun together and she makes amazing pancakes.
We’ve heard that the collaboration with Dave Sitek in LA was very intuitive. Have your collaborations in the past been different?
I think I tend to always wanna put more and more on a track – but w Dave it was more about being true to the moment. Why should it sound like its a symphony orchestra playing when we are three musicians in the studio- I wanted it to reflect where I was at – right now- and he helped me achieve that.
You recorded the album in studios across the world. Did the locations you recorded in affect your music at all?
I actually didn’t record in that many studios…did I? I can’t remember- it was intense I think I might not really have taken in my surroundings but just focused on the music. Most studios look the same from inside- filled w old and new instruments and very often there are oriental carpets on the floor.
We’ve heard that your songwriting for this album was grounded in your hunger to be present in your immediate surroundings. Why did you decide to approach songwriting this way?
Often you write about how you’d like things to be in the future- kinda like your wishes – or you write about experiences from your past tact you’ve reflected upon. On this album I didn’t want to do that- I wanted to write about NOW, where am I what am I feeling. I tried being really honest with myself in the hopes that I can connect w people outs there who feel the same as me. Sisters and brothers in crime (-:
Your last album was released in 2010 to critical acclaim. Did that success change your perception of your own music at all? Did it influence your approach to Wish Bone?
Not really. I just do what I wanna do.
‘Renaissance Girls’ is set to be the next single off the album with a video already online. What is it about this song that made you want to release it over others?
I’m releasing all the songs but this one I felt had a very relevant message for my generation of girls. We are total over achievers and never satisfied with ourselves! The song is mostly a funny list of things I Expect myself to do – which most if them are undoable. I’m not saying don’t aim high. I’m just saying don’t freak out when you don’t get an A on all levels in life! People don’t love you for what you do but for who you are.
Wish Bone is released in Australia on the 1st of November. Do you have plans to tour Down Under anytime soon?
YES! I’m coming for the anniversary if the opera house and playing shows! Can’t wait!!!
What’s on the cards for the rest of the year and early 2014?
Touring and meeting people from all over the world, and then shooting two more videos that I’m working on right now!
Wish Bone, is out Friday 1 November via Federal Prism, the new label launched by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek & Warner Music Australia
