Psychedelic rock isn’t exactly what you’d call a dried up genre, with the recent revival of the garage rock niche almost flooding the scene with bands bringing with them an indie, lo-fi appeal.
Hailing from Melbourne, Flyying Colours set out to play their own brand of indie rock, with psychedelic and shoegaze elements thrown into the mix.
The first thing you’ll notice about Flyying Colours sound is the clear My Bloody Valentine worship, labelling itself as one of the band’s largest influences.
‘Like You Said’ takes clear inspiration from My Bloody Valentine’s sophomore classic, Loveless, through its wavy, almost haze-like wall of sound.
Despite this, the foursome always implements the right amount of fuzz that never comes across as excessive or like they’re drowning in their own sound.
Even Brodie J Brümmer’s soft spoken vocals hints at the likes of Kevin Shields without coming off as a direct copy, bringing with him his own personality.
Other influences include the likes of Sonic Youth and The Smashing Pumpkins, perhaps more apparent on lead single ‘Wavygravy’, but while they draw from a wide range of bands, they also abstain from sounding like a direct copy of any one band, establishing themselves as a bit of a creative Frankenstein.

Flyying Colours don’t necessarily do anything out of the ordinary on their first release, but they do what’d been done extremely well. It’s varied and yet also surprisingly cohesive, retro, and yet strangely modern.
