Pixies have lost a bass player called Kim for the second time this year.
Less than six months after she replaced long-term Pixies member Kim Deal, The Muffs bassist Kim Shattuck has been fired from the seminal alt-rock quartet.
The news came via Shattuck herself, the 50-year-old musician taking to her Twitter and Facebook to alert fans that her time with Pixies was up, as Pitchfork reports.
“Super disappointed to learn that my time with the Pixies ended today,” she wrote. “Amazing experience. Looking forward to focusing my attention back on the Muffs and our upcoming new album. All the best to everyone.”
Kim Shattuck first made her debut with the band back in July, as Slicing Up Eyeballs points out, before hitting the stage with the band in September at a surprise warm-up gig and appeared on record on the band’s EP-1, released the same month and the band’s first new material in 20 years (save for a handful of singles).
Shattuck’s departure follows Pixies announcing an extensive American tour through January and February with Best Coast, FIDLAR, and Cults as support, with no announcement as to whom the replacement will be, obviously sparking rumours that original bassist Deal could return to the fold.
However, it could instead be Jeremy Dubs – the eerie Kim Deal sound-alike that appeared on the band’s July single ‘Bagboy‘, pre-dating Shattuck officially joining the lineup.
“I agree, it does sound a bit like Kim [Deal],” said frontman Frank Black in response to fans at the time; “But it’s my good friend Jeremy Dubs, one of the best people I’ve had the pleasure to know, both socially and professionally.” Dubs, currently the singer for Bunnies, has toured with Pixies and Frank Black in the past as part of The Bennies, so don’t be too surprised if he is the new fill-in for Shattuck.
Meanwhile, Kim Deal – who walked from Pixies after 25 years in June – was recently Down Under as part of The Breeders, headlining All Tomorrow’s Parties’ Halloween bash: Release The Bats.
Deal and co. were there to perform their 1993 album Last Splash, celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a full live performance “with remarkable dedication” as our Tone Deaf reviewer remarked. “[Last Spalsh] has a freshness and vitality that will ensure it keeps its hallowed place in music history.”
The Australian tour also saw The Breeders playing a string of headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to honour the album.
