Similar to the name Songs For The Deaf by Queens Of The Stone Age, Slow Motion Music is more than just a title. It’s an indicator. On his second EP, Sydneysider Oliver Tank creates an aural universe that’s dreamy, cohesive, and slow moving.
Opening track ‘Stay’ is exquisitely sensual and calls to mind Washed Out’s Within And Without. Making use of both organic and synthetic instruments, this track, with its intensifying violins, ethereal synths, and emotive vocals (provided by Fawn Meyers and Tank), is a fine example of dynamic electronica.
Similarly, ‘Different Speed’ and ‘Blessing In Disguise’ both employ soft piano parts and RnB-inspired beats that produce a lush, rich soundscape.
As a body of work, the EP feels like a variation of one theme. Each track features the same elements: a low tempo and a smother of airy synths and vocals.
The main distinguishable element is the inclusion of guest singers. While each vocalist encapsulates a similar mood, the different timbres prevent the occurrence of a blurring effect.
The record’s only true fault is its lack of unique hooks. Whilst all seven tracks are beautifully crafted and bursting with pure emotion, this absence marks Slow Motion Music as the kind of EP that you enjoy, but don’t necessarily feel the need to come back to straightaway.
Aside from this, Tank has crafted a lovely EP that is a quality contribution to the electronica genre.
