2013 marked a busy time for Melbourne five piece The Trotskies. They played a bunch of gigs, released and launched their self-titled EP in October to a good amount of media fan- fare and radio airplay, with reviews praising them as ‘‘…. you can’t help but scream and lose your breath when those gorgeous guitars kick in.’ (Dwarf website). And this Saturday 18th January they officially launch the third single Running they have lifted from the EP at The Workers Club with special guests Oscar Galt and Magic America. Entry is $10, doors at 8.30pm.
Taking their cues from post punk 70s and 80s bands of yesteryear like Ride and Joy Division, The Trotskies are a bunch of very close friends who share a passion for music and comprise of Dean, Joe, Jack, Steve and Alex. Dave Ruby Howe from Triple J Unearthed describes their sound as “Getting good brooding vibes off this one. Interpol’s a probably too-simple comparison but the mood fits – very nervy and taut”.
The four track EP displays that this five piece are clearly cleverly competent musicians who compose solid post-punk pop tunes in an earnest and thoughtful manner and have an economic take on their craft. Above all, they sound fresh and full of energy.
Essentially the live sound they create involves moody transfigured guitars, atmospheric electronics and a robust rhythm section. They omit a jagged and highly infectious pop sound often not dissimilar to early songs from The Cure with their whirling guitar sounds and heavy bass lines. The EP highlights the tight synchronicity of all band members.
Sweet harmonic vocals, layered bass lines and hypnotic- drums all packaged up in heavy-laden pop, is this band’s trademark which will automatically have you reaching for the repeat button on your stereo. They are definitely a band to watch having only been together for a very short time and a determined glint in their eyes.
Make sure you are part of the party as The Trotskies launch their their third single Running from their self-titled EP at The Workers Club this Saturday 18th January with Oscar Galt and Magic America supporting. Entry is $10, doors at 8.30pm.
