The British Government has listed Abbey Road Studios. The building has been given Grade II listing by the government in an announcement made by Culture Minister Margaret Hodge.
The listing means that any alterations to the outside of the building must be given full consideration. In short, it probably means that developers can’t turn the buildings in the exclusive London suburb of St John’s Wood into luxury yuppie apartments. This follows an indication from record label EMI that it won’t sell the studios after all.
The financially crippled record label was reportedly considering selling them to fund massive debt but has put out a statement distancing itself from the plan.
