After the release of their debut album Creation’s Finest in 2012, the trio took Europe by storm. Now the Austrian prog-rock group Mother’s Cake are gracing us with the official Australian release.
The opening number and album title track ‘Creation’s Finest’ is an accurate prelude to the sound of the entire album – heavy basslines, funkadelia, and unrelenting reliability.
It is not uncommon for an eight minute long rock track to evolve into a boring procession, but ‘Runaway’, the third song on the record, is played at such a frenzied pace. With fluctuating tempos, it is impossible to press skip. From grungy guitar riffs to slapping bass and intoxicating keyboard solos, the tune doesn’t miss a beat. This is just one of the stimulating characteristics that heavily features in each and every song, and keeps your earholes metaphorically glued to the music.
As an even further showcase to the Austrian band’s variety, the fourth track ‘Night And Day’ is completely different, with a soulful country ambience and a much heavier focus on lyrical prowess.
‘Soul Prison I’ and sequel ‘Soul Prison II’ together form a combined 11 minutes of rock goodness, a fitting way to cap off a record that neither the artist nor listener wants to end. Creation’s Finest is a treat, and a full musical repertoire that encompasses what Mother’s Cake are all about.
