A Damien Jurado Australian Tour 2014 has been announced, with the acclaimed musician confirming sideshows in addition to performing at this year’s Brisbane Festival.
For his first ever headline visit to Australia, Jurado will hit all east coast capitals and will play the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne (with special guests Summer Flake and Great Earthquake) and Factory Theatre in Sydney (with Summer Flake and Julia Jacklin) before heading north to play in the exquisite surrounds of The Spiegeltent as part of Brisbane Festival.
A unique and distinctive voice for nearly two decades now, Seattle, Washington native Damien Jurado started his journey as a stunning singer-songwriter of major vision in the mid-90s with a series of lo-fi folk recordings on the cassette-only label Casa Recordings.
Jurado eventually landed on the illustrious US label Sub Pop, and more recently Secretly Canadian, while further honing his experimental approach and songcraft.
Innovative and eclectic, Damien Jurado has often turned to found sounds and field recordings for inspiration, this experimental bent paying handsome dividends on collections such as 2000’s Postcards And Audio Letters, which he stitched together from random sources such as op shop tape players and old answering machines.
In recent times he’s found a partner-in-crime for his quest for musical meaning in the shape of fellow Secretly Canadian recording artist and producer Richard Swift (The Shins, Foxygen, touring bassist for The Black Keys).
Jurado’s recently-released eleventh studio album Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Son is the third piece in a Swift-produced trilogy which incorporates recent efforts St. Bartlett (2010) and Maraqopa (2012). Brothers And Sisters… is a vaguely conceptual piece swathed in sci-fi and spiritual imagery and once more set in the fictional realm of Maraqopa, finding the natural born storyteller at his enigmatic and inscrutable best, with Jurado himself claiming that the album is “about a guy who disappears on a search, if you will, for himself and never goes home.”
Of course – as with all great singer-songwriters – Damien Jurado’s unabashed talent spills over into the live realm, and it’s he who’s going to find himself a long way from home this September when he embarks on his first ever Australian sojourn.
Don’t miss your chance to see this captivating creator in the flesh as he brings his inimitable folk explosion to our shores on his inaugural Australian visit!
