You’d think that at this rate the shareholders of EMI would be calling for a spill of the board and bringing in outside administrators to restructure the company and save the profitable bits of it. Oh, no, EMI just keeps rolling along like it’s 1973 – and this time it’s Queen who’ve said they want to ride their bicycle away from the sinking ship. The remaining members of the band decided that they want to break free from the sinking label, saying ‘you’re so self satisfied I don’t need you’. They’re heading over to the arms of Universal who has offered them a better deal. An insider told London’s The Times, “EMI just decided they couldn’t compete. It was too much to pay and they want to spend that money on developing new talent.” Uh, what new talent? EMI hasn’t signed a successful new artist in a looooong time. Queen join Radiohead and Paul McCartney as other big name acts who have recently fled the label.
