Every week the taste makers at Triple J get together and collate a rotation playlist of the freshest, most exciting new tracks of the week, and more often than not they’re right on the money.
This week sees the J’s add Aussie garage upstarts The Creases, the hyped Oxford R n B influenced indie pop outfit Glass Animals and quite possibly one of the biggest singles of the month – Compton rap superstar Kendrick Lamar’s new release ‘i’ added to the fold among many others.
So instead of hearing your new fave track on air later next week and scrambling for the Shazam app, you might as well hear ’em right here right now.
The Creases – Gradient
Their catchy garage-pop singles have made waves internationally and they’ve played alongside some of the biggest names in indie rock; it’s hard to believe that 18 months ago The Creases didn’t even exist. July marked the release of their debut EP Gradient, a five track release filled with undeniably shoegaze influenced garage pop gems.
Ecca Vandal – White Flag
Future pop, post grunge – call it what you will, Ecca Vandal has arrived. Off-kilter melodies meet a tough vocal. South African born to Sri-Lankan parents later raised in Australia. Her ‘citizen of the world’ upbringing funnels down into a deep sonic soundscape that packs a punch for the future dance-floor. Co-produced by Vandal in collaboration with co-writer and producer, Kidnot (Trial Kennedy, Joelistics, Grey Ghost, Phrase) and Hadyn Buxton (Blueline Medic, Trial Kennedy, My Echo, Twelve Foot Ninja). Debut EP on it’s way. Ecca Vandal is one to watch.
Glass Animals – Hazey
Glass Animals are a suave R n’ B meets experimental indie pop quartet that hail from Oxford, UK, and they are one of the most hyped up-and-coming outfits generating buzz around the globe right now. Hazey is the latest single off their debut Zaba, which wasrRecorded at Wolf Tone Studios in London and executive produced by Paul Epworth. Inspired by Kanye West and Velvet Underground this complete beast of a journey captures the band’s natural way with mystery and delivers a brighter, heavier and more intense experience then ever before.
Kendrick Lamar – i
Having recently collaborated with Flying Lotus for the killer track ‘Never Catch Me’ a release taken from Flying Lotus’ upcoming LP You’re Dead!, Kendrick has now dropped ‘i’ the to first single off his yet-to be-released, yet-to-be-titled LP. To call Lamar’s follow up to 2012’a Good Kid, M.A.A.D City anticipated is an understatement, his sophomore LP be a hard act to follow. If this track is anything to go by, it’ll be interesting to see what this Compton talent comes out with next.
Knife Party – Begin Again
Homegrown EDM heroes Knife Party boast an energetic, awe-inspiring live performance ethic, that is renowned for sets jam-packed with adrenaline, masterful dubstep tricks and epic bass drops that have sent crowds bonkers around the world. Channeling that energy, the duo have released their latest single Begin Again which has chalked up an impressive 125,000 plays in the first 24 hours online.
Meg Mac – Grandma’s Hands
Melbourne neo-soul artist Meg Mac released new single ‘Grandma’s Hands’ a few week ago, following recent hit single “Roll Up Your Sleeves”, which has had over 110K plays in 1 month, along with its gorgeous one-take video. Both tracks are from Meg’s debut EP MEGMAC, which was released a fortnight ago. A Sydney native, Meg grew up listening to pop soul pioneers of Detroit and Memphis finding herself inspired by big voices laced with attitude and conviction.
Step-Panther – User Friendly
‘User Friendly’ is the latest track from Step-Panther’s sophomore album Strange But Nice which dropped last week. The release of Strange But Nice marks a new home for the outfit, on tastemaker Sydney label HUB (Zeahorse, Dappled Cities). It also sees a change in Step-Panther’s line-up – original bassplayer José has relocated to the UK for a sabbatical, so while album sessions were performed by long-term mate Sean McGinty, the band’s live line-up now sees Zach Stephenson from ascendant Wollongong garage-rockers Hockey Dad join the ranks.
Steve Aoki – Get Me Outta Here {Ft. Flux Pavilion}
Steve Aoki needs little introduction, as one of the highest paid DJs in the world. The Japanese-American electro house musician, record producer, club promoter, and the founder of Dim Mak Records, has been pumping out dance floor fillers and his latest is no exception. Get Me Outta Here is off Neon Future I, the second studio album for Aoki, which is due for release in 30th September.
