Google have created a new contender in the music download world, currently dominated by Apple’s iTunes and iPhone franchises. Google’s Israeli product manager, Gauray Jain, let slip that the service would coincide with the launch of Google Android 3.0, a reissue of Google’s operating system for smartphones.

Google’s system would operate in tandem with its search engine, so fans searching for a particular artist would then be directly linked to Google’s music store, where they could buy and download tracks. It is expected that Google will be launching the new service before the end of the year, although some reports suggest it may not be until 2011.
