This year is looking pretty darn special for the release of music documentaries, one need only look at the amount of hype that’s surrounding the official Kurt Cobain feature, Montage Of Heck, that’s seen not one but two exciting trailers pop-up online – and now the tragic story of another member of the Forever 27 Club will be told.
Amy Winehouse, the Billie Holiday reincarnate jazz-pop singer from the UK is bound for the big screen in a tell-all music documentary that’s set for release in July of this year.
The film is entitled Amy: The Girl Behind The Name and has been created from A24 Chronicles by Asif Kapadia, best known for his critically acclaimed documentary, Senna.

The haunting trailer shows footage of Winehouse as a youngster, as well as a dizzying amount of photographs and film of her trying to get away from paparazzi as she answers questions from interviews, all the while a bone-chilling rendition of ‘Back To Black’ plays in the background.
The scariest part of this trailer is when Amy is posed with the question, “how big do you think you’re going to be?” to which she responds “I don’t…I don’t think I’m going to be famous. I don’t think I could handle it I would probably go mad” a sad, foreshadowing statement that sends shivers down the spine.
After releasing just two records, Frank and Back To Black, the critically acclaimed artist won a string of awards including six Grammys, paving the way for a whole new breed of talent to breakthrough to the mainstream including Adele and Duffy.

Winehouse tragically passed away on July 23, 2011, her death due to alcohol poison. The troubled singer-songwriter had a long-standing battle with drugs and alcohol, not to mention her highly publicised battle with tabloids that plagued her her short yet incredibly important career.
There has been no official release date for the documentary in Australia as of yet – however the Brits will be able to see the film July of 2015.
