Melbourne duo ALTA dropped their brand new EP late last week, and it’s one of the most fascinating and impressive local EPs we’ve heard in all of 2015.

Titled Awake For Days, the five track release traverses the worlds of laid-back dance, weirdo pop and hip hop while still sounding wholly cohesive. Comprising of producer Julius Dawson and vocalist Hannah Lesser, the two piece have gained a reputation for producing ‘sweetly malfunctioning’ experimental pop you can’t not dance to.

Having shared stages with big name electronic acts like Bonobo and TOKiMONSTA, and performed as part of Outlook Festival in Croatia, these guys are definitely worth keeping tabs on.

To celebrate the release of  Awake For Days (out now via Caroline Australia) one half of ALTA Julius Dawson has given us a track by track run down of the EP, check it out below and for more info on the guys visit their Facebook page.

Esses

Han had been listening to Rihanna a few too many times that day and had just done her last dishy shift at work.

Alive Again

We’d been sessioning lil spook/spooky black so it was a bit influenced by that. We find it super relaxing to make downtempo stuff. We weren’t planning on making a song when we recorded this one, we were taking a break from another track and it felt like this one just came together real naturally.

Awake for Days

The start beat was inspired by demo buttons on toy keyboards. Vocals were inspired by Pharell Hypnotize You (pre hat). At the time we were putting this bullshit pressure on ourselves and eventually we thought fuck it lets do a samba rnb crossover track.

Stashing the Lot

This song is about making trouble. The entire time we were writing it we were thinking about how much fun it was going to be to play live.

Moves

It’s kind of taking the piss out of how we try to conform to something or impress someone but when you drop off their radar for a minute you realise they actually couldn’t give a shit. We wanted to mash all these different parts of songs together to make a kind of unpredictable wack poppy song.
