It’s fair to say that the past few months have been very exciting times for Fifth Dawn. From becoming finalists in Triple J’s Unearthed High competition, to hitting number four on the iTunes rock charts – these five high school kids are already making a serious impression on the Aussie music scene.

The band formed in November 2014 with all the members hailing from selective performing arts and academic high schools, their skills as musicians was developed at a very early age. They began experimenting with different sounds and combining their individual influences into their writing which allowed them to create a unique and innovative sound.

They’re now released their debut EP titled The Horizon, and to celebrate the band’s vocalist Samantha Faul has given us a track by track run down of this very impressive release. Check it out below and if you like what you’re hearing be sure to visit the band’s Facebook page for more info on upcoming shows.

Turbulence

“‘Turbulence’ came about in a very spontaneous way. We hadn’t planned it to be on the EP and sort of wrote it on the fly on the first day of recording our EP. At the time someone dear to me had lost his way post-breakup and I needed him to see things from the perspective of others who love him, and it’s basically that – finding the strength and courage to persevere and push through the struggle (Turbulence) even when things become hazy. “Connected through the wide sea…Connected in tides of a turbulent physical strain” basically highlights the universal fact of life that we do go through hardships including breakups and it’ perfectly normal to feel these things.”

Skyfalling

“‘Skyfalling’ is uniquely personal to me and came about flawlessly when I wrote it, being that it hadn’t changed at all in the process – that never happens. Over the year’s my family and I have struggled over the passing of my brother Nelson who held a significant musical connection to me, and through that the song echoes his life and impact on the world and particularly myself. It lightly touches on his pain but more necessarily acceptance and peace which it’s importance I cannot stress enough when grieving. As a writer and a musician you need songs like this to simply feel and let go.”

Paranoia

“‘Paranoia’ was inspired by an old friend of mine who suffered from bulimia nervosa. It deals with body image in that respect however, stresses the importance of treatment and accepting that some things cannot be achieved on one’s own. It is not meant to be an uplifting song, but more so a wakeup call to those who need help and refuse to admit defeat. Help will be given to those in need I strongly believe in this generation as a female or male, it’s not as easy to get out of that hole as it is to fall in.”

Young Ones

“‘Young Ones’ can relate to anyone and everyone. I am strong believer that the world has a plan for every soul, and that everything that happens in this life is meant to happen and is simply part of that journey. We all have young spirited minds and at times it can be difficult to believe that we’re worth our dreams, and particularly in letting go of the past. The song is about tackling the dilemmas that keep us from moving forward and trusting our hearts in working hard at our goals.”

Dire Hearts

“‘Dire Hearts’ is about being headstrong and giving yourself the second chance you deserve, even when life seems to fail you. It involves cleansing your mind of negative energy and people that stop you from pushing forward. Sometimes we become complacent and stop doing, which I believe that extra push might be ideal which is how I want people to feel and believe when they listen to Fifth Dawn and in particular this song. If we don’t start believing more in the idea that it is now or never, and start working towards our goals, we may end up living in regret. “Take a second shot and see where you stand.”
