Whilst we’ve always been fans of Australia’s oft-maligned West Coast here at Tone Deaf, consistently championing Perth as one of the country’s most underrated hotbeds of musical talent, this tongue-in-cheek ode to Australia’s west, courtesy of triple j‘s Matt and Alex, is pretty glorious.
The black-and-white video, which readers can check out below, is a deft parody of the moody Lana Del Rey single ‘West Coast’, from last year’s Ultraviolence, but replaces the US West Coast and its crown jewel, Los Angeles, with Western Australia and its capital, Perth.
“Our city nightlife’s not dull, unless you go after dark / You can call in a cull, if you don’t like the sharks / If you’ve got a goon bag just head down to Scarborough“, the triple j Breakfast hosts croon over the instrumental from Del Rey’s track as they make their way down a beach.
Despite taking a couple stabs at the city’s nightlife, their coffee, lack of public transport, sports teams, and the shark cull, WA residents are taking the whole thing in stride. “Well WA officially has its new tourism material sorted,” one commenter wrote on YouTube.
