Some of our favourite punks Cancer Bats have come to destroy. Fuelled by a burning desire to rage harder, play louder and have more fun than any other band, Cancer Bats mix hardcore, southern metal and punk rock into a lethal rock and roll explosion.
They’ve been ripping shows, banging their heads and partying to the new tunes of Searching For Zero and are now in Australia this September and October for their first club show tour in almost a decade.
To celebrate their Aussie tour, the band’s Liam Cormier, a HUGE 90s hip hop head has put together a mix featuring his favourite 90s hip hop gems. Check it out below and don’t miss the guus when they roll into your town.
Craig Mack – ‘New Flavour In Ya Ear’
This song is the best! The beat is crazy minimal and all of his verses flow so hard its crazy. There’s also an awesome remix of it too that is worth noting. Sadly this was the only real flavour Craig was kickin in our ears, but all you really need is one banger to make this list!
Pharcyde – ‘Drop’
Everything off this record is a banger but the ultimate is the video for this song! Directed by Spike Jones and shot entirely in reverse around the streets of New York. There’s even a little cameo from Mike D riding a low rider bike. I still jam Wild Ride Of The Pharcyde all the time.
Beastie Boys – ‘What Cha Want’
This was one of the first cassettes I ever bought and it blew my god damned mind. The production is so raw with all the gnarly guitars and organ samples and the drums sound HUGE! It was such an eye opener to what hip hop could be !
Notorious B.I.G – ‘Gimme Tha Loot’
I was always into a lot more of the “backpack raps” and didn’t get into a lot of real gangster type stuff BUT Notorious B.I.G. was incredible and this song is beyond hard core. When he was rapping about snatching the #1 Mom pin off that lady, it blew my mind!
Souls Of Mischief – ’93 till Infinity’
Growing up in Toronto which had a real allegiance to East Coast hip hop and would pretty much only listen to what was coming out of New York. But when Souls Of Mischief, Casual, Del and all the Hyroglyphics scene was blowing up there was no way we could ignore how dope the west coast was. This song is one of the best examples of that laid back west coast groove that all of those guys had.
Tribe Called Quest – ‘Excursions’
I could really pick any song, as I feel Tribe we’re the kings of the 90’s or atleast in my world of skateboarding and hip hop Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders were the sound track. Q-Tip and Phife both had the best rhymes, but at the same time they didn’t take themselves too seriously. The songs were fun and the stories were just on everyday life not always keeping things gangster. I always felt as a kid, that Tribe Called Quest we’re friends with all the MCs and crews in New York because they had the respect of everyone across the board.
Wu Tang Clan – ‘Wu Tang Clan Aint Nuthin To Fuck With’
36 Chambers is one of my favourite albums of all time and is filled top to bottom with bangers. The kung fu samples set such a cool eerie mood to the whole thing, the beats are grimmey and so raw. Every verse tells such an amazing story of the New York these guys all grew up and lived in. I still listen back to this album to try and learn from the masters on how to paint a perfect picture for the listener so they know exactly what you’re talking about.
Method Man – ‘You’re All I Need’
This was one of my favourite solo Meth tracks. Its a solid dirty beat, with a solid flow and then the female vocal hook is perfect. I can’t remember if its Mary J Blige that sings it, but I’m on a plane typing this all from memory so there’s no way I can look it up. Google it for me when you read this. While you’re at it google the video too, its great.
Mariah Carey featuring O.D.B – ‘Sweet Fantasy’
You always need a good club banger and everyone knows that the best way to keep the party going is to get the girls on the dance floor. This track is a solid gold 90’s hit ! My favourite part about it, is that O.D.B is such a gnarly dude, so the idea of him and Mariah even being in the same room together makes me laugh picturing it. His verse is great and this song still makes me wanna dance every time I hear it.
Boot Camp Click – ‘WWBCC’
There’s way too many 90’s rappers that I still want to bring up and all of this tripping down memory lane is great but like I said before I have no internet on this plane as I fly to Australia so I can’t quite remember the name of the Jeru Tha Damaga song I really like or who is credited with the song “when the east is in the house” because it was so many amazing MCs in that song! But also remember Das EFX, Black Moon, OGC’s, and Camp Lo! So all that being said I will end my list with Boot Camp because who doesn’t love a great crew full of awesome MCs having fun and making a dope record together! We be the WWBCC – World Wide! Boot Camp Click till I’m D-O-A!
