If you happened to check the news yesterday, you’ll know that Chet Faker took to Instagram this week to announce that he is prepping the release of new music in collaboration with buddy Marcus Marr, a UK producer signed to NYC’s famous DFA Records.
Oh, wait, no you won’t, because everybody was too busy talking about the fact that Faker, real name Nick Murphy, had shaved off his beard. The internet basically had a collective conniption, with everyone and their mother mourning Murphy’s fallen facial locks.
But if you’re one of the few that was more interested in the promise of new Chet Faker tunes, the Hottest 100-topping producer debuted ‘The Trouble With Us’, the first taste of his studio time with Marr, via triple j last night.
The very funky single is the first taste of a four-track collaborative EP between the two. The release, titled Work, is set for worldwide release on Friday, 4th December via Faker’s own label, Detail Records.
The whole thing was completed during a four-day recording binge at Marr’s South London studio earlier this year and came about after Murphy gave a shout out to one of Marr’s tracks via social media.
“Nick posted my song on Twitter,” explained Marr. “I messaged him and said thanks and a conversation started – all nerdy stuff about recording processes. Pretty soon we started exchanging song ideas in voice memos. He then suggested maybe we try and do something together.”
So what’s the verdict, everybody? Was Murphy’s musical might stored in his facial hair a la Samson and is it just not the same without the beard? Has Murphy committed career suicide by getting out the clippers? Only time will tell.
