One of Irelands most exciting upcoming bands The Coronas will be returning to Australia this November / December with their brand new album The Long Way.

The Long Way was released after their recent signing to the renowned Island Records UK. It sees the band mix punchy singles with catchy guitar hooks, atmospheric piano ballads, and folk-tingles admissions of guilt, with a dominating theme drawing inspiration from a relationship break up. There’s still the boisterous rock for which The Coronas are known – ‘How This Goes’, ‘All The Others’ – but its more textured, a little cooler and more ambitious than before.

After a nation-wide sell-out tour in early 2014, the boys are bringing their impressive live show for a tour of Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. To celebrate their upcoming visit and the release of The Long Way, the band have kindly given us a track by track ruin down of the record which you can check out below.

All The Others

This song is about being passionate – about how sometimes arguing and being vocal about issues is much better than being passive and hiding your feelings. It was a song that came together in the studio, our producer Eliott James worked long and hard with our drummer Conor on the drum pattern and fx to make it a stomping album opener!

Just Like That

The first single from the album, it’s about the unease of spending time with an ex while worrying about whether you both want to move on or not. Our guitar player Dave wrote an amazing hooky guitar line early in the song’s development, and it came together very quickly in a rehearsal room in London.

At The Same Time

This song was inspired by one of my favourite bands, the National. I was listening to a lot of their stuff and loved the way they deliver simple lyrics in an unusual metre and phrasing and that’s how the verses came about. It’s about a fight in a relationship that seems bigger than just a normal row.

The Long Way

There was a moment in studio when we put the group vocals on the chorus’s of this song and got really excited about how it was shaping up. It’s about meeting an ex on a night out and having a lot still to say to them. Some amazing production here from Eliot.

Get Loose

We spent a lot of time adjusting and readjusting lyrics in this song trying to get the tone just right. Not too serious but not too throwaway either. It’s about that friend who drinks and parties a lot and is always convincing people to join him/her.

Silence That Scares Me Now

This was one of the first songs we wrote for the album, in Dingle county Kerry. It’s about how sometimes when the dust settles after a row, the lack of conversation can be the most worrying thing.

How This Goes

One of the later songs we wrote on the album. A simple big rock song about feeling lonely after a break up.

If I Gave Myself To Someone Else

Again this was written in county Kerry on a cold wet January evening. A simple ballad made a little more interesting by our producer Eliot’s idea of layering up the verse vocals with chordal harmonies and using organ instead of piano.

What A Love

This was the last song we wrote and recorded on the album. It’s about being envious but also happy for a couple who have stayed together for a long time. One of my favourites.

Tell Me Again

Dave wrote this song so you’d have to ask him about it, but when he sent us a rough demo of the song we instantly loved it. We were really happy with how it turned out, we kept it mellow and understated, but added some last minute strings that really suited the song.

My Fault

A folk ballad about how two wrongs don’t make a right. It’s in 3/4 waltz time which is different for us but suits the folky vibe. We felt it was a nice closer for the album.
